John Guilford's Hikes
Hurricane Hill, Olympic N.P. on 1995-08-22
Date: 1995-08-22
Location: Hurricane Hill, Olympic N.P.
My Alt. Real Alt.
Start: 5:00 4900 5200
Summit: 5:55 5540 5757 1.5 miles
Out: 6:45 4960 5200
This is an easy, paved trail that only gains 557 feet in a mile and a half.
Continue past the Hurricane Ridge visitor center along a windy (RV's
forbidden) small road to road end. Initially the trail traverses the ridge
along a paved track. Towards the end the trail switchbacks up to the top
of Hurricane Hill. Supposedly the views are real good, though this day the
whole area was socked in with clouds and we couldn't really see anything.
Along the way watch for wildlife. We saw a pair of deer near the
beginning, a family of three deer near the bottom of the switchbacks, lots
of ptarmigans, and even a rabbit on our way out. From the summit ridge we
made out a few marmots down in the valley, but we really needed the
binoculars to make them out during the break in the clouds that we got.
