We had planned on hiking to Heather Lake, but the Pilchuck road was horribly
pot holed. It was so bad I started bottoming out my car so we bailed and
went to Lake 22.
We got to the parking area just in time to find parking. Despite it being
a weekday, the lot was pretty full with folks coming after us parking on
the side of the parking entrance.
Despite the cars, the trail didn't feel that crowded. The trail was wet
and muddy in places. The weather was lovely, sunny and upper 60s.
About mile 1.7 there is a large slide that blocks the trail. It cuts off
the out-and-back of a switchback. Just prior to the slide, someone left
a knotted rope down the hill side to help climb straight up the hill to
the next part of the trail. We went up that way. On the way down, we found
a boot track along the uphill side of the slide that goes between the two
parts of the trail. It isn't as steep as the straight-up part with the rope.
At the lake, we went around to the far side where we found a nice rock in
the sun to have our lunch. We then continued around the lake. I haven't
been to Lake 22 in quite some years. This is the first time I've been here
since they extended the trail all the way around the lake.
On our way back down, the sky started clouding up. We had nice sunny weather
for the first part and while at the lake though.
