Wednesday August 30: Snohomish
Kite over Casey
Today we took a trip to Whidbey Island. After breakfast we took
the Mukilteo/Clinton Ferry to the island, and then drove to Fort Casey. This is
an old coastal defense fort that has a pair of disappearing cannon, and places
for more guns. Apparently it was state of the art when it was built, but then
not long after battleship guns got bigger and planes started dropping bombs,
and those forts became totally obsolete.
After walking around the battlements for a bit, we dug out
John’s stunt kite. That is the kind that has two strings running to it, so you
can steer it. We’ve never flown one like that before, and it was rather fun. It
is much more fun than a normal kite that you can’t control. We were amazed that
with as many times that it crashed into the ground, it never broke.
Then we drove up Whidbey Island and stopped at Oak Harbor
for lunch, then drove to Deception Pass. There is a very high truss bridge over
the pass to the island. We parked and walked over the bridge. Amy, Sam, and
John loved it. I was less than thrilled, as my fear of heights took rather an
exception to the bridge. They went over a second bridge, but I skipped that
one. They enjoyed the view from the bridge. I just looked straight ahead.
After that, we drove up to Mt. Erie to see the views. Then
we drove home in time to make dinner.
Now it is time to pack up our bags and get ready for an
early morning trip to the airport and the end of our vacation.
