Epilogue: Final Thoughts
It was an intersting experience being on a private organized tour. It was good that we didn't have to worry about what to do or where to go, and we certainly saw more wildlife than if we were there by ourselves.
On the other hand, it was somewhat limiting in that there were just the organized activities, and other than that, there wasn't much to do. The worst part was the meal situation. We found it rather confusing, disconcerting, and sometimes upleasant not knowing what was expected, and what we could or could not order. It would in some ways have been better if the food had not been included and the price reduced accordingly. That way we could order what we want and not worry that something was or was not included. Some places, like Uvita handled the food very well. Other places, like San Jose and La Fortuna less so.
In some ways, I think the trip was "backwards". The first place we stayed at after leaving San Jose was a fancy resort. That was really nice, but it led to the expectation that it was going to be like this for the whole trip. As a result, the other accomodations were rather let downs.
The definite low part of the trip was the final meal in San Jose. I had pictured it in my mind during the drive up as sort of a celebratory dinner, one of our last memories of Costa Rica, where we could celebrate the trip and look back at it fondly. Instead, it was a very confusing and almost inedible meal, which was not the way that I would have preferred my last memory of the trip to be.
