Saturday, June 23: Boston to SLC

A tiring day of travel

Our first day is over. We’ve had a busy 24 hours.

The final preparations at home went to literally the last minute. I was shutting down the computers when the van drove up. Getting to the airport and going through security went fairly well. I found out the hard way that you shouldn’t put junk from your pocket inside your shoes when they went through the x-ray machine.

Then to make life a little more exciting, a severe band of thunderstorms came through just before our flight was to leave. The net result was that left late. The plane was a smaller jet, which had two seats on either side of the aisle. Mike got the window seat, I sat next to him, and Amy was across from me.

We landed in JFK a bit after Mike’s bed time. As the plane was coming in, Michael said that he felt a seizure coming on. We’re not sure if this was a seizure or a severe panic attack, but it was pretty scary. We gave him his seizure medicine, but we don’t know if he took both of the pills or dropped one. He thought he dropped one, but we couldn’t find it.

At JFK, we had to do a lot of calming and reassuring. We had planned to eat dinner at JFK, but between leaving Boston late and the stuff with Mike, we were short on time. After we got Mike to the gate, Amy stayed with him and I raced off to get some sandwiches. The place wasn’t the fastest, and when I got back, the plane was already boarding.

When we were getting seating, the best we could get was Amy and Mike in an aisle and a center seat, and me with a window seat two rows back. But we were able to trade me for the person next to Mike, so we were all together.

The Flight to Utah was fortunately uneventful. I probably slept the most, Amy the least, and Mike in between. Still, we were zombies when we got in to SLC at midnight (2am East Coast time). Of course by the time we got our luggage, and then got a taxi to the hotel, it was after 1am. (We had to get a van taxi due to the amount of luggage we had, 5 checked, 3 carry-on, and a med bag--so we had 8 bags that weighed about 45 pounds each.)
