The trail starts near Artist Point on Mt. Baker.
The trail is a bit unusual as it first descends about 750' through
a mostly wooded area onto a flatter section on the bottom of the valley.
After a mile it crossing a small stream and starts an ascent up to a
saddle above Lake Ann. This part is in full sun. It was a sunny, hot
day. On the way up the slope, which consisted of scree, one gets good
views of Mt. Baker.
After cresting the saddle, one drops down a bit to Lake Ann with a gorgeous
view of Mt. Shuksan seemingly close enough to touch.
We saw several groups camping out around the lake. This is a popular
camping spot for climbers doing the Fisher Chimney route up Shuksan.
We found a clump of trees providing shade and had lunch.
After lunch we went down to the edge of the lake where the more intrepid
members of our group waded in and one even swam.
We then circumnavigated the lake, giving some nice photos of Shuksan behind
the lake before heading back.
The climb back up to the trailhead was tiring as the day was hot and it
takes place at the end of the hike.
It is a longer hike, but the views make it worthwhile.
