Boston, The Adventure Begins

Yet another adventure begins. It begins, as usual, with my sitting in Logan airport, waiting for our flight, typing up my first report.

Also as usual, for the past 24 hours or so, I’ve been my usual neurotic, sleepless self. Now that we are in the airport and through security, and I no longer need to worry about whether or not I’m packing the right stuff (I’ve packed what I’ve packed, and it is too late to change that now), I should relax. The next big question is whether/how well I’ll sleep on the plane. I usually sleep really poorly, but last time I actually managed to doze for a few hours. Business class would be really nice, but it is also really expensive. As we did our flights through Viking, we can’t upgrade one leg, we could only upgrade all 4.

Of course, you can’t bring water through security. So my standard process is to bring an empty water bottle with me, and after I get to the gate area, I find a filling station and fill it. I’m sitting in a nice, new Terminal E, and I found the nearest filling station. The problem was that the water would come out in a tiny dribble, and after about 10 seconds or so, it would shut off, and you would have to remove the bottle and start over again. I got maybe a half cup into Amy’s water bottle, but I felt sorry for the people lined up behind me, so I left to give them a chance. I found a different filling station, and I was shocked to find that it was filling even more slowly.

I returned to the first one and waited in line. Someone came by and said that the one at the far end of the concourse was working properly, so I went over there. There was a short line, but it was filling at a normal rate. I filled Amy’s bottle (I had left mine back with my pack with Amy), went back, got my bottle, returned and filled mine. Even with the walking, it was significantly faster than dorking around with either of the first two. I’m surprised that they were working so poorly for such a new building.

I also did my good deeds for the day. To repay (in a sense) the person who told me about the working filling station, on both of my journeys I told several other people who were fighting with the bad one about the working one.

Our trip in from Northborough was about perfect. The guy arrived at the scheduled time. There were no other people or stops, and the traffic in to the airport was light. There was a bit of a line at Swiss Air, but it moved at a reasonable pace. There were no issues, and they didn’t bother printing out new boarding passes. The ones that I had printed at home were good enough.

This time, we had our TSA-pre information attached to our boarding passes, and going in through the TSA-pre line was relatively quick and uneventful.

Our Plane

Amy got some clam chowder to try to settle her stomach. In theory, we should start boarding in about a half hour.
